Amber Electric and BYD Australia today announced the expansion of their vehicle-to-grid (V2G) partnership to include the Sealion 7, opening Australia's largest live V2G program to eligible owners of BYD's top-selling EV.
Amber's V2G program, backed by $13.6 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), is scaling to 1,000 households, helping customers turn their EVs into batteries on wheels, powering homes, cutting energy bills and earning credits from exporting to the grid. With more than 50 live V2G sites currently up and running, and a waitlist of more than 8,000 people, it's the largest program of its kind in the country.
EV sales in Australia have been on the rise this year, and in August, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids and hybrids together accounted for more than 50% of total vehicle sales for the first time ever, as drivers look to avoid rising fuel costs. BEVs alone made up 25.6% of total sales. Now, more of those drivers will be able to go further, offsetting costs with the potential to earn through V2G.
Today's announcement builds on the early success of BYD's involvement in the program, with BYD now backing a second model after their Atto 3 proved the technology's appeal and great results for customers. It's a strong signal of confidence in where V2G in Australia is headed, and in Amber's ability to deliver it.
Since launching in Australia in February 2025, the Sealion 7 has become BYD's top-selling EV, with more than 30,000 customers to date. Built with BYD's acclaimed Blade Battery technology, the Sealion 7 also includes V2L capability as standard, allowing owners to power appliances directly from their vehicle. Sealion 7 customers will now be able to pair their EV to the grid.
As with the Atto 3, Sealion 7 owners taking part in the program will have their EV battery covered under BYD's comprehensive warranty support, removing one of the last barriers to V2G adoption.
Amber V2G participants will be able to purchase an eligible BYD Atto 3 (Evo Dynamic or Premium) or Sealion 7 (Premium or Performance) at a six per cent discount off the base RRP, including GST, making it easier for eligible households to get behind the wheel of a V2G-capable vehicle.
Clare Rainbow, Head of V2G, Amber Electric said, "We're the leading residential V2G program in Australia, and having BYD expand its support to the Sealion 7, its best-selling model, is a big deal. It means a much bigger group of Australians can access V2G and start earning money from a car that would otherwise spend most of its time parked. That's how this technology starts to become mainstream"
Sajid Hasan, Chief Product Officer, BYD said, “The Atto 3's involvement in V2G has shown us the value this can unlock for customers, and as strong supporters of the technology, we're proud to broaden that partnership with Amber. Bringing the Sealion 7, our most popular vehicle in Australia, into the program means more drivers can turn their EV into an asset at home.”
Amber and BYD are showcasing their partnership at Everything Electric, held at Sydney Olympic Park, from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September, at stand C14. The Amber and BYD teams will be on hand across the event for anyone interested in learning more.
