We’re saying goodbye to Charge HQ

We've made the decision to close Charge HQ. It's not a decision we took lightly. Charge HQ made it easy for EV drivers to charge from rooftop solar, across many popular inverter, charger and battery brands, with a set-and-forget experience people loved.

When Amber acquired Charge HQ in January 2025, co-founder Jay Banyer brought something real into Amber: deep EV expertise, hands-on experience running Charge HQ, while contributing to our Amber for EV product development, and a lean, agile mindset that shaped how our teams build. We're grateful for everything he contributed, and the impact he had on the products we build today.

Why we're moving in a new direction

The energy market has changed a lot in 18 months and so has Amber’s EV offering. Charge HQ helped us accelerate fast.

Firstly, core elements of the smart charging functionality Charge HQ was built around are now part of Amber for EVs.

Secondly, the opportunity for EV owners on Amber has evolved. Today, it's about Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and bidirectional charging, whole-of-site optimisation across solar, batteries and EVs, and supporting more EV and charger brands. We believe EV owners are best served by a wholesale price model because that's what maximises the value earned.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a big part of that. This technology lets you power your home with your EV or send energy back to the grid and earn money from it. Modelling in NSW suggests optimised V2G charging could be worth around $2,500 a year. The momentum is real, and it's a big opportunity for EV owners.

With those opportunities in mind, we’ll be focusing on delivering the best EV solutions for Amber customers, and we’ll no longer be operating and maintaining Charge HQ.

Here's what happens next

  • From 6 July, there will be no further subscription charges. You'll continue to have access to Charge HQ until 7 September
  • You can download your charging history before the service closes - once it's shut down, that data won't be retrievable
  • After closure, you may need to restore your vehicle or charger to its default charging behaviour

What happens to data

All personal data, including payment details and equipment connection credentials, will be permanently deleted within 30 days of closure on 7 September. Anonymised, non-identifiable charging data may be retained.

Where to from here

If you’re a Charge HQ user, we know this might not be the news you were hoping for, and we're sorry for the disruption this causes to your setup at home. We want to give you the time and space to find what works best for your setup at home. That's why you'll have free access to Charge HQ until 7 September, so there's no rush and you can make the right call for your situation.

If that next step is Amber, we'd like to make it easy. Any Charge HQ customer who joins Amber will get six months of Amber subscription fees free - worth $150. But whether you come to Amber or not, we hope the free access period gives you the breathing room to figure out what's next.

If you have any questions, we're here to help. For help regarding the closure of Charge HQ and your account, see this FAQ or contact info@chargehq.net.
