If you're an Amber customer in South Australia with solar (and especially if you've got a battery), you've probably heard about SA Power Networks' two-way tariff, known as RESELE. It's one of the most common things our SA customers ask about - so let's break down what it is, how to get on it, and what to expect.
What is the two-way tariff?
The RESELE tariff is a pricing structure managed by SA Power Networks (SAPN) that changes the way solar exports are valued throughout the day. Instead of a flat export rate, it rewards you for sending energy to the grid when it's needed most and applies a small charge when there's already too much solar flooding in.
If you've got a battery - particularly one automated through Amber's SmartShift - the two-way tariff can work in your favour. Your battery can charge up during the low-value midday window and export later when export rewards are higher, helping you earn more without lifting a finger.
How do I switch?
The switch itself is handled by SAPN - we submit the request on your behalf. Here's how it works:
First, you'll need to receive an opt-in form via email from Amber (or fill out our expressions of interest form here). Once you've completed that, we'll submit your tariff change request to SAPN for processing.
From there, it's over to the network. SAPN processes tariff switches on the 1st of each month and it can take around five days to come through, so don't stress if you don't see any updates in your account until around the 6th.
Before you opt in
There are a couple of things worth knowing before you make the switch.
If you're unsure whether it's the right move, it's worth considering how much solar you're exporting and when. Households that export heavily during the middle of the day without a battery may want to think carefully. But if you've got a battery, or you're already shifting your usage to take advantage of wholesale prices, the two-way tariff can be a smart addition to your setup.
The bottom line
The two-way tariff is part of a broader shift in how networks are managing solar on the grid. As more households install solar, networks like SAPN are introducing pricing signals that encourage smarter energy use - exporting when it helps the grid, and storing or self-consuming when it doesn't.
