Amber was founded by climate activist Dan Adams and techie mate Chris Thompson to solve the biggest problem holding Australia back from reaching 100% renewable energy: making it easier and rewarding for more Aussies to use more green energy and act on climate change. While other green energy providers focus on offsetting your fossil fuel energy use, we’re laser-focused on helping you reduce your fossil fuel use in the first place.
Right now, for anyone on a traditional retail energy plan - even a green energy plan - it’s very hard to actually use more green energy. We all draw power from the same grid and traditional plans don’t provide you with the tools you need - for example, live wholesale energy prices that drop when there’s more green energy in the grid, and the % of renewable energy in real time. Amber empowers you to make a choice.
All energy retailers buy their electricity from the same wholesale electricity market, where prices are set every 30 minutes by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). The wholesale price is the true price for your usage that Amber (and other retailers) have to pay to provide you energy.
It’s normal for the wholesale price to fluctuate up or down in each 30 minute period depending on supply and demand, encouraging more power generation when the grid needs it, and less when it doesn’t.
The wholesale price that Amber passes through includes wholesale energy costs (which vary every 30 mins), hedging costs (a small fee to cover the cost of offering our Amber price guarantee), the rates charged by your local network (who own the poles and wires), metering costs and regulated charges for environmental schemes and market operations. We also add on a carbon offset to make your energy use carbon neutral.
Amber makes nothing at all from your energy usage. Our $19/month subscription fee is our only margin for running Amber.
While Amber offers the same 100% Carbon Neutral and GreenPower plans as other electricity providers, our model goes a step further than the rest. For a $19 a month subscription, you get access to wholesale electricity prices and the Amber app which enable you to shift more of your energy use to when power is both greener and cheaper.
Unlike other energy retailers who charge a mark-up on the energy you use, Amber makes exactly $0 on your energy usage and empowers you to go beyond offsetting. We’re so committed to our mission that the monthly fee is the only revenue we generate to run the business.
Great app, intuitive interface. Love what they're trying to do and excited to see how continue enhancements to technology bring them closer to their vision. Nature of the beast is that you're exposed to price fluctuations so you need to pay attention. Overall I think I pay less than I would through a traditional retailer.
My experience with Amber has been excellent. It takes time to get your head around this new way of billing but, once you understand it, you won't turn back. Fabulous rates, clean and green, excellent service and support. I can't rate them high enough! GO AMBER!

Amber is like a breath of fresh air! After using well known three letter energy retailer for years I have made a switch a week ago and not going to look back. Amber gives you what other retailers don't: FREEDOM. I am free to decide when to buy energy and when not: having solar and battery it gives me options I did not have before. But this morning I've got a message from Amber and it prompted me to write this review: they experienced a bug in their system. I am software engineer myself and I know that bugs are inevitable. It is how do you deal with them matters. And Amber's actions are proper and outstanding: they are honest and they going to wave fees for the customers which were affected. When they got a problem they own it and deal with it as a good business would instead of sweeping it under the rug.Honest energy retailer with clear vision - that's what this country needs! Simply - Amber is the best clean energy provider with a long-term commitment to customer lower bills. Talk Solar with them for you, for your supply - talk with them about anything. Realistically they're an easy mob to deal with.
Exemplary customer service from day one and savings beyond what was promised. The app is user-friendly and has improved substantially. Knowing when the price will be low enables timing of use (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer etc). Very impressed and enthusiastic customer.
I've been with Amber for over a year now, and I cannot recommend them enough. From signup to the smooth transition of service, they have the best customer service you can imagine. The smart shift app is superb, and even without Solar, the wholesale prices are better than any profit-driven corporations in AU!

We’re really happy with SmartShift. It’s reduced our bills, no doubt about it. While we were overseas recently we had six weeks of high prices where we did a lot of exporting, which was great. And SmartShift’s been clever enough for us to rely on it doing what we want it to do with our battery. Plus, it helps make things a bit greener for everyone. If you have a battery then Amber is a great option.
I have learned and enjoyed having Amber as our energy supplier. 1. You can make real change through your usage habits. 2. With data and the incentive of cost, you can change you habits. 3. As a country we need to change our building and usage habits so we don't keep using the grid on gas and coal at 6pm at night! 4. Energy storage matters. Amber as a company is fantastic. Great customer service, very flexible, honest and open. This is a rarity in the modern world. A year ago I would have said go for it without a second though, but now you really have to look around. Wholesale electricity pricing is not so attractive these days. Due to wholesale electricity being quite expensive at the moment, especially when there is low renewables available, it makes the difference between wholesale and VDO very small. You need to shop around and see if it is worth it.
I’m so happy with Amber and their business model with prices that can’t be matched. I can recommend them to others !
Exciting and empowering new concept for energy consumers. An opportunity to reign in our electricity bill as we reduced our environmental impact and support SA's transition to renewables.
It's not always the cheapest, but you can see amber is working hard to change the way we use energy to make a greener and better future for the grid. The concept is so unique and clearly not the best for everyone, but as we are able to better control our energy usage in the future amber will be come more and more relevant.
Amber is brilliant, but it's not for everyone. They are focused on transparently helping all of us understand what is needed to switch to a renewable (and cheap) Energy Model. Right now, that means you should CHANGE your behaviours when prices are significantly higher or lower. I'm saving money with this model not because average wholesale prices are ALWAYS cheaper, but because I know what they are and I react accordingly. Some of this is programatic, like when I charge my car ( a big user and at 10c/KWh makes a big difference), and when I might let fridges turn off for an hour or two (all handled automatically), and some of it is me reacting to spikes and using a BBQ instead of an oven to cook a roast. I guess my point is these are the tools for change, but you do have to use them.
Amber provides excellent customer service to their customers , value for money, their app is technically advance and most importantly Amber is helping us reduce our carbon footprint and use electricity wisely everyday . All thumbs up 👍🏻
So far I'm very impressed the provider is working in our favour so much better with solar aswell I've been through alot if retailers been screwed over ripped of etc specially from energy Australia whom put me through hell for months desided to join Amber to give it a go it impresses me each and everyday no disappoints yet absolutely loving it and the service can't go past them hopefully we can take there services to western Australia once we move will not be going to anyone else there a fantastic company just what we were looking for loving it.

Have been an Amber customer for 1 month, and very impressed with their platform, especially being able to retrieve prices & useage using python. Of course with solar export you need to be aware of the occassional negative prices and limit export if you can. On the upside I got $3.00 /kWh for export at 15:00 on Nov 18 when the wholesale price hit the ceiling!
