Have your climate cake and eat it too

When it comes to going green, Amber’s doing energy differently. Get access to wholesale energy prices that drop when there are more renewables in the grid, so you're empowered to save while doing right by the planet.

The secret is out. Greener = Cheaper

Behind the magic of Amber is one simple truth: renewable energy is now the cheapest form of power. You’re not alone if you didn’t realise - most retailers’ fixed price plans mask this juicy fact.

With Amber, a $15 monthly subscription fee empowers you to tap into the real cost of energy through our mobile app, letting you save even more by shifting your usage to greener, cheaper times. And by ‘save’, we mean your cash AND the climate.

The magic of the Amber app

Downloading and using the app is the single most important thing you can do to maximise the benefit of wholesale prices.

We'll use the app to notify you by email, push notification, and/or SMS (your choice) whenever the wholesale price is much higher than usual, so you can shift your usage to cheaper and greener times.

How do I join Amber?

100% free to join Amber - There are no upfront costs when switching to Amber .

Sign up online - The sign-up process is 100% online and takes less than 3 minutes, just make sure you have your payment, ID, and concession details ready.

Step 1:

Cooling-Off Period

The cooling-off period is a mandatory process that happens every time you change electricity providers. It lasts 10 business days, so roughly two weeks. We’ll send you welcome emails and updates during this time but if you change your mind in this cooling off period, you can cancel your transfer to Amber. No hard feelings!

Step 2:

Meter Read

After the cooling-off period, Amber goes to work! The first thing we need is to get a meter read so you can get a final bill from your old retailer. If you’ve got a smart meter this will happen within 3-4 days. For other meter types, the timing will depend on your network but we’ll get it done as soon as possible.

Step 3:

You’re all switched

Once we have a meter read, we will let your old provider know that you will be switching across to Amber (that’s right, no sweat off your back here, we do all the breaking up for you). And that’s it, you are now officially an Amber customer.

Step 4:

Download the App

Download the app to start viewing live prices. If you don’t have a smart meter, we’ll get our partner to put one in for you at no cost.

Access cheap wholesale energy prices and boost the renewable energy revolution.

We back our mission with a guarantee

(And put our money where our mouth is)

We've got you covered. We pass through wholesale prices directly to you, and over the course of a year this is typically significantly cheaper than the Government’s Default Market Offer (their reference price for power).

To give you peace of mind we guarantee you'll never pay more than the Default Market Offer (or VDO in VIC) on average over a year or we’ll credit you the difference.

Renewable energy is now the cheapest form of power. Our mission is to transition Australia to 100% renewables.

What is the onboarding process?

We understand changing electricity retailers is not something you do everyday. Fortunately, it is pretty easy and you won't lose power at any stage in the onboarding process!

After you have signed up online (it only takes 3 minutes), we will take care of everything for you:

1. Meter read: We contact your provider and arrange the final meter read
2. Smart meter: If you don’t have a smart meter, we’ll get our partner to put one in for you at no cost.
3. Amber app: Download the free Amber app and start viewing live prices and get insights on your energy usage.

And if you change your mind during the 10-day cooling off period, you can easily switch back to your old retailer.

Do I need a smart meter? How much does it cost?

Having a smart meter enables you to see detailed usage data in the Amber app, which means you can be charged the exact wholesale electricity price for your usage as at each 30 minute interval, so you can be rewarded for using power at cheaper and greener times.

Without a smart meter, we can only pass through the typical wholesale rates in your area, because we can't see the times when you used power.

We attempt to install a smart meter for every Amber customer who doesn't already have one. Around 90% of the time we're able to successfully install a smart meter at no additional cost.

But for 5% - 10% of customers there may be some additional works required to create a safe environment for the meter install to take place. If this is the case, we'll explain any additional works that are required, and their cost and you'll always have the option not to proceed and to remain on a basic meter or interval meter if you choose, and will continue to receive Amber's typical wholesale rates.

What payment options do you offer?

We currently offer direct debit via bank account and credit card, and BPay to customers as payment options.

When you receive your bill with us, it will have a due date listed that is the date the direct debit is automatically processed. Please note there is a 1% transaction fee on credit cards.

BPAY is also available to all our customers, so you have the flexibility to pay your bill in advance (bill smoothing), or pay in instalments up to three days before the bill due date. If you are interested in this as a payment option, please reach out to us.
